Managing Stress in the Workplace this Year

Managing Stress in the Workplace

Let’s face it, no matter what industry you work in or the job position you hold, dealing with stress at work can sometimes be unavoidable. While we may not always be able to control certain stressors in the work environment, we can certainly manage them to mitigate their effects on our work and mental health. Here are a few ways to avoid and alleviate stress in the workplace.

Identify Stressors:

Keep track of the things that are causing you stress throughout the day no matter how big or small. Once you’ve identified the stressors, take time to think about how you can eliminate and/or alleviate them so they don’t get in the way of your productivity (and sanity).

Establish Boundaries:

We’ve all seen those emails come through our phones from a client or colleague after normal working hours, and technology has made it all too easy to respond instantaneously. Depending on your specific role and/or employer policies, responding to emails or requests after hours may come with the territory. But if you do have the opportunity to establish some boundaries, then it might make sense to set some expectations with those you work with for how you handle non-urgent matters during off-hours.

Take Time to Unplug:

Working long hours with little time for yourself can be stressful and lead to burnout. That’s why it’s important to take the time to unplug and step away from your work at times. There can be a fear that if you fully unplug, you will fall behind. But the truth is, taking the time to unplug can actually make you more productive at work. Whether it’s unplugging on vacation, after working hours, or during a quick midday coffee break, take the time to recharge so you can revisit your work with a clear mind and better handle any stress that comes your way.

Move Around and Breathe:

Sounds simple, right? Sometimes a quick stretch of your legs and a few deep breaths is all you need to reset. Taking the time to stretch, go for a quick walk or take some deep breathes can help get your blood flowing and alleviate any tensions you may have. These simple, quick resets will give you the productivity boosts you need throughout the day.
